PICaxe 18X

The PICaxe is a micro controller based on a range of Microchip PICs. There are a number of PICaxe variants of differing pin counts, the 18X is one of the 18 pin devices (based upon the PIC16F88). It allow user generated programs, upto 600 lines of BASIC, to be downloaded using a simple RS-232 serial connection.

18X PinsThe 18X, as standard, gives access to 5 Input (inc. three ADC) and 8 Outputs, however these can be modified or re-configured using suitable PEEK/POKE commands. An example can be found here:- Reconfiguring PICaxe IO

ADC - Analogue to Digital Converter
i2c scl / sda - Allows interface to I2C devices
Infrain - Infra-red input (TV Controller)
Keyboard Data / Clock - Allows PC Keyboard Interface
PWM - Pulse Width Modulation
Serial In / Out - Programming Interface


18X Minimum Circuit

The minimum circuitry for the 18X is quite minimal, the download circuit needs just two resistors and a connector. We'd recommend a stereo jack to match Rev-Ed's
Serial (AXE026) and USB (AXE027) cables but cables can be easily constructed to work with either serial ports. The reset circuitry requires a resistor and a push button switch, as shown.


The current handling capabilities of PICAXE chips is taken from the Microchip datasheets. This may be subject to change or re-rating, always check the latest datasheets before use.

Current "sourced through chip" is the current into VDD (+V) : 200mA
Current "sunk through chip" is the current out of VSS (0V) : 200mA
Sourced or sunk through all ports combined : 100mA
Sourced or sunk per pin : 25mA
