MiniSumo @ UK Micro Mouse
The 2010 event took place on 26th June and was a relatively informal competition. Around the competition we'd a fantastic oppertunity to discuss construction and tactics. Along side the weigh-in we'd a play with a spring ballance for some simple tyre (pull) testing. The pit area was shared with the other competition competitors, giving a great oppertunity to see the build on other small robots. Eight minisumo where entered by five competitors, after an morning of finial fettling a league competition was started. This was done on a Play-All basis where each minisumo had just one oppertunity to beat their opponent - seven bouts against seven different minisumo. The minisumo where:-
AFM, built by Colin (Slurp), conformed to the Formula Minisumo Spec, Stybb was based on the SAMrI kit and built by Mike (WTF52), while Spykee built by Chris utilised the Tamiya gearbox, similar to SAMrI, under a Mecanno body. Static pull tests saw Stealth 2 built by PeterW achieve 450g, Insoumountable 250g also built by PeterW, Noname 240g built by Mike but a possible 600g with a rubberband tyre (when bands are suitably modified), AFM managed 430g and Spykee 400g. It appeared that Spykee's ribbed (printer feed) wheels gave a superior dynamic performance but this wasn't measured. Low Blow was another of Peter's minisumo, No-Name was another of Mike's and Interceptor was built by Richard. The competition saw a number of very decisive rounds but also a number that played out to full time or ended in a timed out draw. The video captures most but not all of the rounds, there's a number of odd minisumo responces and some cracking rounds:- AFM vs Insumountable (0:16) AFM starts well but is clearly on Insumountable's scoop. As Insumontable almost goes out AFM is flipped up and Insumountable runs AFM out of the ring. Note Insumountable doesn't touch down out of the ring and the ring should have been approximately 12mm taller to give the requires ring to surrounding clearance. Interceptor vs Low Blow (0:28) Interceptor give it's charicteristic agressive start but is overturned by Low Blow. It's clear who wins from here. No-Name vs Spykee (0:45) No-Name is no match for Sypkee's superior pushing power. I've got No-Name down as one to watch for in matches to come. Pre-match pull tests where way down the scale but it was clear that minor tread modifications would make a significant difference. Stybb vs Stealth 2 (0:52) Quite a drawn out match, seemingly equal pushing power that had the minisumo pushing for some time. It would be interesting to see these two in a match that required some opponent searching. AFM vs Interceptor (2:05) Again an aggressive start for Interceptor, however AFM wasn't pushed back. AFM seems to track Interceptor round but ultimately it's Interceptor who drives out of the ring. Insumountable vs Low Blow (2:18) You can see the initial problem Insumountable has in detecting Low Blow, for a while it appears that this will lead to a win but the table is turned mid-round. Stybb vs No-Name (2:36) Stybb and No-Name seem a close match for pushing, it's clear who has the upper hand. Stealth 2 vs Spykee (2:51) This starts out looking like a close match but it's all over as Spykee is turned over. AFM vs Stybb (3:03) This was one of the longer matches, almost running to time (3 minutes). AFM appears to be pushing the whole time but is steered around the ring drawing out the win. No-Name vs Insumountable (6:00) A clear decisive win for Insumountable, a clear difference between rubber coated tracks vs un-coated tracks. Stybb vs Spykee (6:06) As the minisumo rose up on their scoops, I was surprised how Stybb managed to push back on Spykee. The push was stalled with Spykee hanging on the edge of the ring, the round was conceeded. Stealth 2 vs Insumountable (7:01) Initially the minisumo jump into search mode, just out of sight of each other, then Insumountable take the upper hand with Stealth 2 pusked square on the side. This side push means that Stealth 2 pulls the pair in wide circles, there was really no chance of changing the outcome. AFM vs Spykee (7:35) AFM barely makes an impact on Spykee's initial position, as the round continues it looks like a close thing but Spykee maintains the upper hand. The pair disengage and as Spykee starts to hunt AFM runs straight out of the ring! No-Name vs Interceptor (8:35) A sharp, aggressive win for Interceptor, although maybe a little close on the 5 second (not tested in this competition). Stealth 2 vs AFM (8:41) A miss-start by AFm has Stealth 2 runing first but the real win occurs then AFM is overturned again. No-Name vs Low Blow (8:54) Despite being low on weight, Low Blow has the superior traction. Interceptor vs Insumountable (9:24) Another aggressive start for Interceptor who then spins away, Insumountable appears to miss oponent detection and then continues out of the ring missing the edge too! No-Name vs Stealth 2 (9:31) No-Name doesn't match Stealth 2's push, a short match. Stybb vs Insumountable (9:42) You can see the greater turn of speed that Insumountable has but the push was relatively even. It's not always clear who has the upper hand. As the round is timed to an end a no-score draw is agreed. Interceptor vs Spykee (12:51) Interceptor's aggressive start looks like it will give it the edge over Spykee but ultimately Interceptor disengages before a second aggressive approach that finsihes out of the ring. Stybb vs Low Blow (13:03) An interesting win for Low Blow with Stybb backing away. I'd wonder if the SAMrI's edge sensors picked up on Low Blow's opponent detection to falsely activate. This might explain the pecurlar action. No-Name vs AFM (13:12) What is going on? AFM makes an inital approch but turn it's back only to be chased/pushed out of the ring. Stybb vs Interceptor (13:22) An aggressive push back by Interceptor followed by a stall, both agreed a no-score draw before time was called. Low Blow vs Spykee (13:46) Spykee gains a decisive win against Low Blow, a straight push back out of the ring. No-Name vs Stybb (13:54) Stybb get the win with a good push back against No-Name. First place goes to Stealth 2 with 6 wins, Insumountable took second with 5 wins and Spykee third with 4 wins. Wins from all the rounds are noted below. Thanks go to Mike for recording the event. ### Table to be inserted ### |
